Sheffield Wednesday are set to complete the signing of defender Julian Börner, who will join the Owls on a free transfer when his contract with Arminia Bielefeld expires this summer.

The 28-year-old, who captains the side, has featured in 25 games for the club this season, who play in the German second-tier.

It was believed that he would stay and sign a new deal with Uwe Neuhaus' side after five successful years in Bielefeld, however the Sheffield Star have reported that he is close to moving to Hillsborough.

They also include quotes from the German club's sporting director that were issued to their local media that suggested a move is imminent for the player.

"We would have liked to have extended with Julian and the agreement was reached. Therefore, we are disappointed that in this case the given word does not matter. Nevertheless, we wish Julian all the best for his future in England."

Should the deal go through, he would become the first permanent signing of what is sure to be a very busy summer for Steve Bruce.

The Verdict

Börner will be arriving with a decent pedigree as he is at a good age and has been playing regularly in Bundesliga II over the past four years and that is a competitive league.

So, this signing should excite Owls fans and on a free transfer there really isn't much to lose.

More importantly, it shows that Bruce recognises the need for defensive reinforcements and they will hope the player is one of many new faces coming through the door.
