Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on a move for George Byers, according to Wales Online reporter Ian Mitchelmore.

The Swansea City man looks set for a fresh challenge after falling out of favour at the Liberty Stadium.

Despite making 65 appearances for the Swans, Byers fell down the pecking order under Steve Cooper last term and found himself heading out on loan to League One side Portsmouth as he looked to get his career back on track.

With just one year left on his deal the 25-year-old is at a pivotal point in his career and will be looking for regular first team football as he looks to kick on.

Sheffield Wednesday have recruited well so far this summer and it seems that Byers could be closing in on a move to Darren Moore's side, according to Mitchelmore.

Taking to Twitter, Mitchelmore said: "George Byers is close to securing a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday.

"Trained with the Swans at Fairwood for the final time today. Deal has been in the pipeline for a while but couldn’t be ratified until arrival of new boss."

The verdict

This could be a really good signing for Sheffield Wednesday.

George Byers is a player of real quality who has been somewhat unfortunate to fall down the pecking order with Swansea City.

He showed glimpses of his quality with Portsmouth but this move will surely give him a solid platform in which to rebuild his career.

Sheffield Wednesday are going into a big campaign and so Byers has the opportunity to be a big player in a big chapter in the club's history.
