Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal will celebrate his 100th league game in charge of the club this weekend, as the Owls travel to Cardiff City.

The club confirmed the milestone on their official site, and the Portuguese boss will hope his third season with the club will end in promotion to the Premier League.

The Owls have reached the play-offs in each of the previous two seasons under Carvalhal, losing to Hull at Wembley in his first season, before a disappointing defeat over two legs to Huddersfield Town last year.

Wednesday have enjoyed a solid start to the new campaign - picking up 12 points from a possible 21 - and Carvalhal will hope to mark the occasion with an impressive display against a Cardiff side entering the game off the back of their first defeat of the season.

The Verdict

Carvalhal’s two years with the club can be considered a reasonable success, although promotion to the Premier League has so far evaded the 51-year-old, who ended a three year exodus from management to link up with the club in 2015.

With the squad at his disposal, it could be third time lucky, and Wednesday will certainly hope for a place in the top-six this season as a bare minimum.

Questions may be asked of Carvalhal if the club are not promoted this year, and the board could potentially look to new leadership if elevation to the top flight is not delivered.

To be guaranteed of another 100 games in charge, Carvalhal needs to get Wednesday promoted this season.

Wednesday fans, does promotion have to be achieved this year for Carvalhal to have a future at the club? Or will his job be safe with a playoff spot?
