The next two weeks are arguably the most vital of Sheffield Wednesday’s season.

Having just had a transfer embargo lifted, Jos Luhukay’s side are now able to sign players on loan, and they need to act fast.

The deadline for temporary additions is August 31 and having been unable to make a single signing in the permanent window during the summer; it starts now for the Owls.

Two defeats in three of their opening Championship fixtures show there is a clear need for improvement, despite picking up a point at home to Hull.

Time is against them, but their season effectively starts now with the news that they can register players.

Eleven days is all that is left is to bring in a maximum of five players before the deadline passes.

There are several areas of concern, however, starting with the defence.

Along with the backline, there is a distinct lack of depth in the Sheffield Wednesday squad.

Four of the seven substitutes in the Brentford defeat on Sunday afternoon were from the academy, and with the lack of depth comes inexperience in what could well be a relegation battle for the Owls this year.

Luhukay might have to take the hit on the next two games and focus all his attention on bringing in players to better his side before it is too late and they are cut adrift come January.

On the other end of the scale, they will need to keep hold of Fernando Forestieri if they have any chance this season, regardless of whom they acquire between now at the end of the month.

Sheffield Wednesday after in disarray and this embargo being quashed is what in essence could save their season.

They need to make the right signings if they are to have any chance of competing, let alone surviving this season in the Championship
