Sheffield Wednesday are putting preparations in place for the January transfer window, according to reports.

Portuguese title Abola have reported that the Owls were one of two English sides in attendance for the clash between Benfica and Maritimo at the weekend.

While it's not clear which player was being targeted, it's clear that the Championship side look to have found a potential player or two after being spotted at the Estádio da Luz on a number of occasions this term.

As well as Sheffield Wednesday, Premier League side Brighton were also in attendance.

Among those who impressed in the game were Pizzi, Chiquinho and a certain former Queens Park Rangers player called Adel Taarabt.

However the one player who is bound to have caught the eye on Benfica's 4-0 victory was Brazilian striker Carlos Vinicius who bagged a hat-trick.

Whether he's a player who is a viable option for Sheffield Wednesday is doubtful, but the Owls fans will no doubt be happy that their club are looking further afield to bring the best talent to Hillsborough.

The verdict

The January transfer window is a crucial time for any club in the Championship, but particularly Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have aspirations of pushing for the play-off positions in order to give themselves an outside chance of securing a surprise promotion to the Premier League.

Doing so will be a huge task, but if they can do some smart business in January then few would bet against them.
