Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham City, Preston North End and Sheffield United are all eyeing a move for Millwall striker John Marquis, according to sports journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The 22-year-old is currently on-loan at Sky Bet League One outfit Gillingham and he has already scored five goals in seven appearances for the Gills.

Gillingham have been in excellent form over the past few weeks, and Marquis has been integral to the superb form of the Kent club.

It is no surprise to see a number of Championship clubs interested in the 6ft 1 forward, however it is uncertain whether Millwall boss Ian Holloway will be keen to let the young forward leave in the summer.

Speaking after last Tuesday's win over Peterborough, Marquis said to Kent Online:

“I have always believed in myself and always thought of myself as a goalscorer,”

“It is about playing in the team that suits me and how I want to play.

“Things are going perfect for me at the moment. It is going well and I would play MK Dons tomorrow. I just want the games to come thick and fast.”

London club Millwall allowed Marquis to join the Gills for the rest of the season.

Marquis admits that his time at Millwall is looking like it will come to an end, subsequently adding to the hope of the clubs chasing the in-form striker.

“I wouldn’t say I have had a point to prove,” he said.

“It is easy when things aren’t going well and you’re playing for a team not doing well to get down and miserable.

“I've always believed that if I got fit and played in the team things would go well.

“I had a couple of bad injuries and was out for almost a year and a half, not playing regularly. It takes me a few games to get fit and sharp.

“I've hit the ground running and it feels like it is coming back. I am feeling fitter game by game.

“I think my time at Millwall is done. I had a brief chat with the manager there and I am not in his immediate plans.

“I'm here until the end of the season and my contract is up. It can all change very quickly but I think my time is pretty much done there.

Marquis has a wealth of Football League experience having had spells at Millwall, Portsmouth, Torquay United, Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town and Gillingham.
