Sheffield Wednesday are set to rival League One duo Peterborough United and Barnsley for the signing of Ollie Swain, according to HITC Sport.

Swain currently plays for Bedford Town and a trio of Football League sides are hoping to poach him this summer.

The 21-year-old plays as a central defender and is a left-footed option at the back.

In his short career, Swain has already played nearly 100 games for Bedford, who play in the Evo-Stik Southern League.

The young defender has been watched by a number of Football League scouts and this trio could swoop.

These three sides are not the only teams chasing Swain, either, as National League side Dagenham and Redbridge are also in the hunt to snap up the in-demand centre-half from Bedford before the window closes.

The Verdict

Swain is clearly one for the future, rather than an immediate first-team fix.

For the Owls, this will frustrate supporters who are desperate to see new signings but it could prove to be a shrewd long-term investment.

At such a young age, he already has lots of senior experience under his belt and that will prepare him well when he will be needed to step up another level.
