Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay is hopeful that Matt Penney will commit his long-term future to the Owls by signing a new contract in the coming weeks.

The 20-year-old has featured nine times for the Yorkshire side this season, one of many youngster to break through and make a positive impression.

And, Wednesday are keen to reward Penney for that by offering him a new contract.

With his current deal set to expire in the summer, the Owls will be keen to sort this out as soon as possible and Luhukay told the Sheffield Star he expects it to get done.

"The meetings and the conversations are there so we make no pressure. I'm positive that the club and Matt make in the next few weeks a decision."

"I hope that Matt sees his future here with Sheffield Wednesday. Matt was far away from the first-team two years ago but now he is completely in and plays every game."

Penney is sure to be involved against Middlesbrough when they come to Hillsborough tomorrow and he will hope to keep up his good record in the team.

Wednesday are yet to lose in the eight games which the youngster has started.

The Verdict

This is very good news for Sheffield Wednesday although they will just want the deal signed.

The prospect of letting Penney's contract run down to the summer is a real concern given how he is performing, so the Owls will be desperate to get this sorted.

It would benefit the player to stay with Wednesday too. He is getting a chance in the first-team and this has been a real breakthrough campaign for him, with Luhukay deserving credit for how he's brought through the youngsters.
