Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of Wigan Athletic midfielder Josh Windass on loan until the end of the season.

Windass, who joined Wigan from Rangers back in the summer of 2018, has gone onto make 56 appearances in all competitions for the Latics, scoring nine goals for Paul Cook's side in that time.

The 26-year-old is now set to spend the rest of the season at Hillsborough, after securing a temporary move to the Owls for the remainder of the campaign.

Wednesday were not the only Championship side to have been linked with Windass this month, with Nottingham Forest, Cardiff and Bristol City all also credited with a late interest in the midfielder.

It is however Garry Monk's who have secured the services of the midfielder, as they look to boost their chances of securing promotion to the Premier League, with the Owls currently 12th in the Championship standings, five points adrift of the play-offs.

Wigan meanwhile are 22nd in the second-tier table, four points adrift of safety.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

Given Windass has found himself in a side struggling for survival in the Championship throughout his time at Wigan, you have to wonder whether he is the sort of player Wednesday need in the push for promotion.

Despite that, given the level of interest there has been in Windass this month, it could be argued that this will still present something of a coup for the Owls.

It will be interesting to see just how much of an impact Windass is able to make at Hillsborough, and you feel he will be determined to prove that he is capable of competing for promotion at this level after 18 months looking over his shoulder somewhat at Wigan.
