Sheffield United will consider Paul Coutts for first-team action later in the month, with the midfielder set for two appearances in the coming week.

Coutts suffered a horrific leg-break last season against Burton Albion, with the injury almost keeping the midfielder out of action for a year.

However, Coutts has made significant progress, with his return edging ever closer.

The 30-year-old featured for just over 60 minutes of Matt Roney’s testimonial last week, and was also included in Chris Wilder’s matchday 18 against Aston Villa prior to the international break.

A report in the Sheffield Star has revealed that Coutts will feature tomorrow against Charlton Athletic in the Professional Development League, with another appearance scheduled in for September 17 against Nottingham Forest.

If Coutts can come through those fixtures without any reaction, Wilder will then consider him for a senior recall.

Despite the absence of their influential midfielder, Sheffield United have made a fine start to the season, with Wilder’s side sitting third in the table at this early stage.

It was a testing start to the season for the Blades, but four consecutive victories have left them in a strong position.

Wilder’s side take on Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.

The Verdict

This is the sensible approach for Sheffield United to take, as Coutts has been out of action for some time.

The midfielder is so important to the Blades, and getting him fully fit will be a big boost for Wilder.

Heading into October and beyond, a fully fit Coutts will make a big difference.
