Sheffield United are reportedly looking to sign a striker with Premier League experience when the January window rolls around, according to the Sheffield Star

Wilder reportedly made the notes two months ago and remains keen on bringing in an attacking midfielder if the budget will stretch far enough.

In recent weeks the Blades have been linked with both Jermain Defoe and Shane Long, with the Sheffield Star hinting that they are targets.

Defoe, in particular, has been short of minutes since moving to Bournemouth, making just four appearances in the Premier League for a total of 22 minutes.

The Blades have been thoroughly impressive over the opening 17 matches of the Championship season and currently sit in fourth place, but just three points behind table-toppers Norwich City.

They have hit a bit of a rocky patch in recent weeks, winning just one of their last five matches, and were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby before the international break.

But, Wilder will be hoping to get the club's season back on track on Saturday when they travel to Rotherham United.

The Verdict

In Billy Sharp, Leon Clarke and David McGoldrick, the Blades have good options, but a striker like Defoe or Long would bring something very different.

It's definitely the type of signing that would signal the Blades are going for it in the promotion race.

January will be a vital month, and Wilder seems focused on getting the right players on board.
