Sheffield United are considering a move to sign Sam Gallagher from Southampton this summer.

The striker was previously on Chris Wilder’s radar at Bramall Lane, but the Sheffield United boss opted to not pursue a move.

However, the Blades’ boosted funds this summer have led to Wilder considering making a move to sign Gallagher, with the 50-year-old monitoring the striker still, according to the Sheffield Star.

Gallagher’s first-team opportunities at Southampton have been limited, with the 22-year-old making just 20 appearances across all competitions for the Saints.

He has spent time out on-loan in the Football League, with last season seeing him link up with Birmingham City in the Championship.

The Blues struggled during the 2017/18 campaign, with Gallagher making 34 appearances across all competitions and returning seven goals for his temporary employers.

Wilder is keen to add another striker to his squad this summer, despite boasting one of the Championship’s most prolific duos last season – Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke.

Sharp scored 13 Championship goals last season, whilst Clarke was even more prolific, bagging 19 in the league as Wilder led the Blades to 10th.

The Verdict

With Wilder looking to strengthen his attacking options, Gallagher could be a good option for the Blades to turn to.

The striker is young, which is a good contrast to Sharp and Clarke, who are both experienced.

The 22-year-old scored seven goals last season, but is slowly showing signs of improving in senior football.

Another spell in the Championship could help Gallagher become prolific.
