Gary Madine has passed his medical ahead of his surprise move to Sheffield United from Cardiff City on loan until the end of the season.

The target man previously played for the Blades bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday and has also had several high-profile issues with United fans and also captain Billy Sharp.

Therefore, many were surprised when he emerged as a potential target for Chris Wilder even though the club were on the lookout for a new number nine.

However, the deal is progressing quickly, with Sky Sports reporting that the 28-year-old has passed a medical ahead of his transfer to Bramall Lane.

The former Bolton man has struggled since making a move to the Welsh capital, where he has failed to score after joining in January last year, although the Bluebirds still won promotion.

This season, he has largely been on the fringes, making just five substitute appearances in the league, with the last one coming at the start of November.

Providing the deal goes through this week, Madine could be in line to make his debut for his new club against QPR this weekend.

The Verdict

This is a very surprising deal given Madine's history but in terms of his ability he should be able to offer something to the team.

Despite his struggles at Cardiff, the striker was excellent at Bolton and will provide Wilder with a real physical presence up top.

But, it's important he hits the ground running as the fans won't give him too much time.
