Championship side Sheffield United will evaluate whether to reignite their interest in Fleetwood Town’s Devante Cole in January after failing to strike a deal over the summer, reports The Sheffield Star.

The 22-year-old only moved to Highbury Stadium last year following a short stint at Bradford City, and the striker went from strength to strength with the Cod Army last term to help them reach the League One play-offs.

The former England youth international bagged five goals and laid on four assists to help Graham Alexander’s side secure a fourth place finish in the third tier last season, although he was unable to inspire them to victory over Bradford City in the semi-finals of the play-offs, and he has continued his fine form into this campaign with four goals in four games for the club.

And his excellent attacking efforts in the last 12 months or so attracted firm interest from Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United over the summer, although the Blades were unable to get a deal done for the 22-year-old, and recent reports suggest that the Championship side will evaluate their shortcomings before considering a move when the window reopens in January.

Wilder’s men added two new faces on deadline day in the form of Clayton Donaldson and Ben Heneghan, and Cole looked set to be the third man through the door at Bramall Lane only for talks to break down for one reason or another.

Those reasons will be looked at by the Blades, and they will form the basis as to whether they will reignite their interest in the striking sensation in the New Year.

The Verdict: Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was clearly on the lookout for attacking reinforcements on deadline day, and felt that Fleetwood Town’s Devante Cole was one man who would bolster his ranks at Bramall Lane.

Yet no deal was forthcoming for the 22-year-old despite reported bids from the Championship side, with Wilder stating that ‘other people within the industry’ were to blame for the collapse of the move.

And it’s the influence these ‘others’ may have or continue to have on Cole which the Blades are set to look into over the coming weeks, the findings of which will shape their decision on whether to go in for the forward in January.
