Sheffield United will continue to rival Middlesbrough in the race to sign Martyn Waghorn from Ipswich Town this summer, as Chris Wilder looks to strengthen his attacking options.

Waghorn has been on the Blades’ radar for some time this summer, but Middlesbrough have entered the race to sign the 28-year-old having lost Patrick Bamford to Leeds United yesterday.

However, according to the Sheffield Star, Boro entering the race to sign Waghorn hasn’t put Wilder off, with Sheffield United set to compete with the Teessiders for the service of the Ipswich forward.

Wilder is looking to bring Waghorn to South Yorkshire before next week’s transfer deadline, as the Bramall Lane boss looks to round off his transfer business with the 16-goal forward.

Waghorn was amongst the Championship’s most influential forwards last season, impressing during his debut season at Portman Road.

The ex-Rangers forward scored 16 goals for the Tractor Boys and added a further 11 assists, despite Ipswich struggling in mid-table for large parts of the season.

Sheffield United and Middlesbrough aren’t the only Championship clubs interested in Waghorn, with Derby County also admirers of the forward.

However, the report claims that Frank Lampard could be forced to sell Matej Vydra first to fund a move.

The Verdict

Waghorn is certainly in-demand this summer, and rightly so, after a fantastic 2017/18 campaign.

For Sheffield United, he’d be a great addition, and if Wilder can get in ahead of Middlesbrough, it will feel like a major coup for the Blades.

This transfer saga doesn’t feel like it is anywhere near the end of the road.
