Sheffield United have beaten off competition from West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion in the pursuit of Antonee Robinson, with the left-back set for a £2m move to Bramall Lane from Wigan Athletic.

Wigan have plunged into administration and have been, subsequently, relegated into League One, with a host of players now expected to follow Paul Cook out of the DW Stadium.

Robinson will be one of those, with the left-back attracting the interest of Sheffield United, West Ham and West Brom, who were all keen to offer him a route into the Premier League.

QUIZ: Can you name these 13 hidden ex-Wigan Athletic players?

As per David Anderson, it is the Blades who have won the race to sign Robinson after agreeing a £2m with Wigan’s administrators.

That means the young left-back will be heading for Bramall Lane to compete with Enda Stevens for a place at left wing-back, with West Ham and West Brom seemingly set to explore other options.

Robinson was set for a move to AC Milan back in the January transfer window, but that deal to take the left-back to Italy fell through at a late stage of the January transfer window.

In total, the 23-year-old made 38 appearances in 2019/20, scoring one goal and registering one assist.

The Verdict

This is a top signing for Sheffield United at £2m.

Of course, Wigan’s off-field situation means that Robinson is departing at a cut-price and he is worth so much more, which makes it an even sweeter deal for the Blades.

Robinson fits perfectly into their 3-5-2 system and will provide Stevens with some much-needed competition.
