Sheffield United are interested in a move to sign Ipswich Town defender Luke Woolfenden, a report from the Daily Mail has claimed.

The Blades, who currently sit sixth in the Premier League following a hugely impressive return to the top-flight this season, are reportedly in the market for a centre back who suits the overlapping style of play employed by those playing in that position under manager Chris Wilder.

That has is thought to have led than to Woolfenden, whose versatility allows him to play at both centre back and right-back, something which apparently appeals to Sheffield United.

It is reported that the Blades have been closely monitoring the 21-year-old recently, and could even make a move for the defender in the current transfer window.

A graduate of Ipswich's academy, Woolfenden has made a total of 30 appearances for the Tractor Boys since making in his senior debut for the club in 2017, and has also spent time out on loan with Bromley and Swindon Town,

Woolfenden only signed a new contract with Ipswich last February, which secures his future at Portman Road until the summer of 2022, with the club holding the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.

The Verdict

This could be a useful signing for Sheffield United.

While the step up from League One to the Premier League is unquestionably a big one, the number of options the Blades currently have in that position means that Woolfenden would not have to be thrust straight into a regular starting position, which could make this one for the future.

Woolfenden's contract situation at Ipswich does at least mean they are under no pressure to sell him anytime soon, and it will be interesting to see if the Blades are willing to stump up the cash they may need to prise the defender away from Portman Road this month.
