Sheffield United have hit a worrying patch of form in the Sky Bet Championship, with Chris Wilder’s side losing three of their last four fixtures, picking up just a single point from a possible 12.

That run of form has coincided with Paul Coutts’ broken leg, which the midfielder suffered in Sheffield United’s last victory against Burton Albion last month.

The influential midfielder is set to miss the rest of the Championship season, with Wilder looking to turn to the January transfer window to find a replacement.

Jonathan Buchan of BBC Radio Sheffield, has this morning confirmed that Wilder has told him a bid has been made to bring Ryan Leonard to Bramall Lane, with the Blades reigniting their interest in the Southend United midfielder.

Sheffield United had looked to sign Leonard during the summer ahead of their Championship return, but failed to agree a deal with Southend.

However, the midfielder has remained on Sheffield United’s radar after an impressive start to the season, with Wilder keen to bring the 25-year-old to Bramall Lane in the New Year.

Wilder confirmed that no further bid would be made by Sheffield United for Leonard following the latest offer, with the Blades setting a deadline on the deal.

The Verdict

Leonard is a long-term target for Wilder, and it is hardly a surprise to see Sheffield United in the hunt to sign the midfielder this January.

Coutts’ injury has dealt the Blades a huge blow, and Wilder clearly knows that central midfield is now an area that must be strengthened in January.

Leonard would be a good addition, but the Blades have laid all their cards on the table by confirming this is their final offer.
