Bradford City have enquired about the availability of Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp with the hope of taking the 32-year-old on loan, reports Alan Nixon of the Sun.

The deal would be dependent on the Blades bringing in other striking options which would result in Sharp no longer being needed next season.

Taking to Twitter, Nixon said: "Bradford. Asking about Billy Sharp on loan. In case Sheff U get strikers and sideline him."

The Bantams will be hopeful of making a push for promotion this sesaon after a disappointing campaign resulted in a mid-table finish.

Manager Michael Collins has already begun ringing the changes, bringing in multiple new players so far in the form of Hope Akpan, Anthony O'Connor, Richard O'Donnell, Thomas Isherwood, Josh Wright, Connor Wood, Sean Scannell, Joe Riley, George Miller, Sherwin Seedorf and Jack Payne.

Billy Sharp was an integral member of the Blades emphatic League One title success in 2016/17, scoring 30 league goals and assisting eight more.

The verdict

This would be a great transfer for Bradford City. Having a goal scorer of Sharp's calibre in what is sure to be a close-fought league could be vital and subsequently the difference between winning promotion or not.

I struggle to see a situation in which Sheffield United let their club captain and club legend leave for the season, however.

You get the feeling that Sharp is still an important presence at Bramall Lane even if that presence is not on the field as often.
