It’s been a strong start to the season for Sheffield United who will be hoping to survive in the second tier this season.
The Blades were promoted from League One last season after winning the title, finally returning to the Championship after six long years in League One, which they struggled to break out from.
They now face the almighty challenge of staying in the division, something that will be immensely difficult considering the spending power of the Championship this year.
But a win against Brentford and an extremely strong performance against title favourites Middlesbrough has been encouraging, and some have even tipped Chris Wilder’s side to mount a challenge for successive promotions.
One man who would seriously boost their chances of beating the drop would be former England international Rickie Lambert, who had his contract at Cardiff terminated last season.
Lambert is a ruthless goalscorer at Football League level, having netted 165 goals in 11 seasons in League’s One and Two and the Championship, but struggled at Cardiff City, especially when eclipsed by star striker Kenneth Zohore.
He is now a free agent, and a move to Sheffield United would be a smart one.
The Blades play with two up front, and with Billy Sharp the firm favourite up top, Lambert could join to partner him, as he did with Southampton in 2012.
If Chris Wilder could get Lambert firing again he could be a crucial part of their side, and along with Sharp, his goals could steer the club clear of League One.
