Sheffield United have had a busy day as they welcome six scholars into their first ever professional contracts.

Marcus Dewhurst, George Cantrill, Keenan Ferguson, Jordan Doherty, Oliver Greaves and French striker Simeon Oure have all penned professional contracts at Bramall Lane as the Blades plan for the future.

Academy Manager Travis Binnion told the club's official website: "These players have been given new deals as we feel they have the potential to progress. It is now up to them to continue to work hard and develop as quickly as they can to take the next step in their careers."

Dewhurst has recently earned international recognition with England's U17s, whilst Oure has settled into the English way of life after spells with USMF Gagne and Nimes in France.

Cantrill, Ferguson, Doherty and Greaves have all looked at ease in the club's development squad and have done enough to earn themselves a full time contract, just reward for their hard work.

In addition to this, three first year professionals have signed extensions to their existing deals. Jordan Hallam, Harvey Gilmour and Callum Semple have all agreed a one-year extension as they look to break through at Bramall Lane.

The Verdict

It's always nice to read about young players being rewarded with a professional deal, but the hard work starts now.

I'd wager most, if not all of the players signed today will get some experience out on loan next season.

Ultimately, young players need blooding in men's football and there's no better way of doing that than sending them out on loan in the lower divisions, or even the National League set up.
