Championship side Sheffield United pursued with their attempts to land Fleetwood Town’s Devante Cole on deadline day, but ultimately to no avail, reports The Blackpool Gazette.

The 22-year-old only moved to Highbury Stadium last year following a short stint at Bradford City, and certainly proved his worth to Uwe Rosler’s side in League One last term.

The former Manchester City youngster bagged five goals and laid on four assists in 37 league games to help the Cod Army reach the end of season play-offs, although he was unable to inspire them to victory over Bradford City in the semi-finals.

And with four goals in four games for Fleetwood this season already, Cole is clearly making giant strides, and subsequently was attracting interest from Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United over the summer.

And recent reports suggest that the Championship side had ‘multiple’ bids for the 22-year-old turned down on deadline day, as the Blades chief seeks further reinforcements following a solid start to their second tier campaign.

Wilder’s men have won three and lost the other two of their five league games this term, leaving them in fifth place going into the international break, although their tally of five goals scored is the least of any side currently inside the top six, and appears to be something the Sheffield United boss was seeking to address on deadline day.

However, they were unable to strike a deal for Cole, who will remain at Fleetwood until January at least.

The Verdict: Fleetwood Town striker Devante Cole has made a stunning start to the new season to back up his fine efforts for the club last term.

The 22-year-old has scored four goals in four League One games already to help the side to three victories from those games, further underlining immense pedigree in front of goal, as well as highlighting the bright future he has in the game.

And Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United clearly felt that he would bolster their ranks by launching several bids for the striker, although the Cod Army stood firm and have retained Cole’s services beyond the deadline.

Fleetwood deserve credit for rebuffing their approaches which were likely to offer decent financial reward to the club, although the striker remains an integral part of their squad, and could quite easily be the difference between going up and not come the end of the season.
