Sheffield United have taken teenage sensation Zak Brunt on trial, Matlock Town's official website has confirmed.

Matlock winger Brunt has impressed Sheffield United scouts enough to convince them to give him a trial spell.

Brunt will now join the club's academy set-up on a trial basis, hoping to earn himself a contract with the Championship club.

The 16-year-old is already in the first team at Matlock and after impressing in non-league, he is set to earn his chance to shine at Sheffield United.

Brunt has previously played for Manchester City, Derby County and Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid at youth level.

Now he has impressed for Northern Premier League Premier Division side Matlock, who play in the the seventh tier of English football.

The non-league starlet has attracted attention from the higher divisions and now Sheffield United will look at him as they aim to bolster their options for the future.

Sheffield United finished 10th in the league after beating Bristol City at Ashton Gate on the final game of the season but it was a disappointing end after sitting in the play-offs for most of the season.

The Blades will now play another season in England's second tier for the 2018/19 campaign.

The Verdict

Brunt is clearly an impressive player, already featuring in senior football despite his young age.

Although the step-up from seventh tier to the Championship is significant, the 16-year-old still has a lot of time to develop his game in the academy and eventually graduate to the first team.

A trial period is the perfect way for the Blades management staff to compare him to their current under-18 options.
