Sheffield United are still monitoring Brentford's Ollie Watkins as they look to strengthen their squad following promotion to the Premier League.

It had been reported at the end of May that the Blades were interested in the player but nothing appeared to develop in the past week or so.

However, Sun reporter Alan Nixon has confirmed on Twitter that the 23-year-old remains on the radar of Chris Wilder's side when responding to a question from a fan, although he suggested they will need to spend big to prise him from Griffin Park.

"On Sheff U list. If they find the cheque book."

Watkins has enjoyed a very productive two years with the Bees since making the move from Exeter, scoring ten league goals in his past two seasons.

Capable of playing across the front line, the player has established himself as one of the most exciting talents outside the Premier League.

Therefore, the Blades could face serious competition for Watkins, with Sky Sports stating that Southampton and Crystal Palace are also keen on the attacker.

The Verdict

Most Sheffield United fans will be pleased by this as Watkins would add a lot to their team with his pace and skill that would give them something different in the final third.

But, it's going to be hard to do a deal for various reasons, with the most obvious one agreeing a fee with Brentford who will demand big-money for their player.

So, it will be interesting to see how this plays out but Watkins is certainly someone who would improve the Blades squad.
