Billy Sharp has praised Oliver Norwood following his Sheffield United debut, describing the midfielder as a very good player.

Earlier this week, Sheffield United moved to sign Norwood on-loan, with that deal set to become permanent when the January transfer window opens.

Norwood made his first Sheffield United appearance yesterday in the 1-1 draw with Hull City in the Carabao Cup.

In a close penalty shootout, it was Norwood’s missed penalty that gave Hull the victory, with the Tigers progressing into the second round.

Despite that, Sharp was full of praise for Chris Wilder’s new midfielder. Discussing the 27-year-old with the Sheffield Star, the Blades’ club captain said: “He was brilliant. His range of passing was brilliant, and he was the only one I was really confident would score his penalty!

"But he's a very good player and it's nice to have him on board, because he's a good addition. He's been promoted in the last two seasons so he's a player used to being around the top of the Championship, and I'm sure he'll blend in nicely with the midfielders we've already got."

Norwood won promotion with Brighton and Hove Albion during the 2016/17 campaign, featuring on 33 occasions in the Championship that year for the Seagulls.

Last year, Norwood was with Fulham, featuring on 39 occasions in the league, as Slavisa Jokanovic’s side won the play-offs.

After making his debut in the Carabao Cup last night, Norwood will now be looking to feature in the Championship, with Wilder’s side back in action this weekend.

Norwich City visit Bramall Lane on Saturday, with the Blades looking to make it back-to-back victories in the league.

The Verdict

On paper, Norwood looks like an excellent signing for Sheffield United.

Of course, the proof will be in how he performs, but Sharp is clearly impressed with what he’s already seen.

Norwood has proved over the last two years that he can have a major impact in a side pushing at the right end of the table. Sheffield United’s supporters will be hoping he can help put them in promotion contention.
