Sheffield United will not be signing Southampton striker Sam Gallagher.

The Blades had been linked with a move for the Saints youngster during the summer, along with a host of other Championship clubs, but it now appears that the Blades will not be able to afford his signature.

According to Alan Nixon, who was replying to a question on Twitter, a deal for Gallagher would cost more than the reported £8m Blackburn are set to pay for Ben Brereton, and when quizzed if the Blades could afford Gallagher, Nixon replied with an abrupt 'no'.

The news will come as no real surprise to United fans, who have become accustomed to their club not parting ways with big sums of cash to snap up the best available talent around.

However, at £8m or more, it could well be a blessing for Chris Wilder's side, with Gallagher yet to demonstrate that he is worth that sort of money during various loan stints in his career so far.

Gallagher had his most successful spell playing in League One with Blackburn Rovers, but ultimately failed at the likes of Birmingham City and MK Dons.

The Blades have won their last two games and broke their transfer record this window with the signing of £4m Brentford man John Egan.

United fans, what do you think? Surely happy to not pay this much for Gallagher? Let us know your thoughts!
