Sheffield United striker Leon Clarke is set to join Wigan Athletic on loan until the end of the season, as revealed by Football Insider.

The 33-year-old was one of the key players for Chris Wilder last season as his side charged to the towards a possible top six finish, but he's fallen down the pecking order at Bramall Lane this season with both Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick impressing.

Clarke scored 19 times from 39 Championship outings in 2017/18, arguably playing the best football of a long, nomadic career.

He's represented no fewer than 18 clubs after breaking through with Wolves in 2003, with 11 loan spells during that time.

He's no stranger to the Latics, having been there on loan before in 2014/15 season. He scored once in a ten game spell but later joined Bury permanently in League One which led him to Sheffield United.

Chris Wilder has been linked by Football Insider with a £12m move for Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan, making Clarke's route to first team football even more congested.

The Verdict

This is a good move all round.

Leon Clarke surprised many last season, even himself if truth be told, but his shelf life at Bramall Lane has expired.

He might have a job to do in the Championship, but he won't be playing for a top six club on a regular basis.

If Wigan play to his strengths, he might be the difference between a relegation battle and a mid table finish this campaign.
