Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan is attracting interest from Championship clubs following his impressive loan spell at Blackpool, as per Football Insider.

The defender spent the first half of the season on loan at Bloomfield Road and this stint is set to expire on the 14th January. Heneghan is out of contract in the summer and would be available to leave the Blades for nothing in the summer if he can strike an agreement with another club.

With Chris Wilder’s side clinching promotion and looking to consolidate their position in the Premier League, first-team action at Bramall Lane has been hard to come by, so he moved to League One Blackpool where he has made 18 league appearances and shone under Simon Grayson.

These performances have led to growing speculation over his future and increased interest from Championship clubs who could seek a cut-price deal for the centre-back in the summer.

Football Insider are now reporting that a trio of Championship clubs are chasing his signature, with Luton Town, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers all credited with interest in the 26-year-old.

There are contrasting fortunes for the three sides who need signings for different reasons at the moment, with Luton and Wigan fighting relegation, while Blackburn are on an outside push for the play-offs.

The Verdict

This would be a smart move from any of these clubs who would not have to spend much to prize him this month or will spend nothing if they pursue a move in the summer.

It would be a blow for Grayson and Blackpool to lose a key defender but it does appear that Heneghan seems set for at least Championship football next season, whether it be at Bloomfield Road, Kenilworth Road, Ewood Park or the DW Stadium.
