Sheffield United confirmed the signing of Championship veteran, and free-agent, David McGoldrick earlier this week, as Chris Wilder and his team look to improve on last season’s tenth place finish.

Despite finishing four spots clear of the play-off places, the Blades were just two wins away from securing a spot in the lucrative play-off places, and a shot at Premier League football – something they haven’t experienced since 2007.

The signing of the 30-year-old striker is one that was welcomed with a mixed reception though however.

On one hand, it is always a positive for your side to acquire a new forward and goal scoring threat, but some of the Sheffield United faithful were seemingly expecting a slightly more high profile, bigger name signing.

But, that isn’t to say the former Republic of Ireland international can’t still perform at this level.

Having played in the Championship for the likes of Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town, there is no question that McGoldrick could bring wisdom and knowledge to the current Sheffield United side.

The experienced forward, who signed for Ipswich back in January 2013, found the net six times and contributed four assists in his 18 starts for the Tractor Boys last season.

While the goal return isn’t one to get too excited about, playing second fiddle to last season’s Blades top goal scorer Leon Clarke could be beneficial to both parties.

It will allow an aging Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke, the latter of whom turned 33 this year, a chance of more rest games throughout the coming season.

While having a combined age of 95 between the three of strikers, perhaps Chris Wilder is taking a step away from youth, and a step towards wisdom, in order to try and succeed this season.

Wilder showed his excitement at the acquisition of McGoldrick in an statement on the Sheffield United website, stating: “I've continually said that we only want to bring in players who strengthen us and David ticks that box. He's a great link player, has a wealth of Championship experience and he may be coming into the best years of his career.

"David wanted to return north and this was too good an opportunity to turn down. His attitude and ability, not only in the matches he has played, but also on the training ground, is without question. I've spoken to a number of respected people about David and they cannot speak highly enough of him."

David McGoldrick might not be a first choice forward this season, but with the old guard taking charge in the Blades attacking line, we might just see Premier League football return to Bramall Lane soon.
