Sheffield United would be naive to think that their current squad is good enough to definitely secure and retain their Premier League status next year.

They also, though, have to be wary of doing a Fulham.

‘Doing a Fulham’ means you have a great set of young, hungry, talented players who earned you promotion from the Championship but may not have the desired quality for England’s top-flight, so you spend millions and millions of pounds to replace these players with good individuals who then fail to connect as a team and fall victim to relegation.

Chris Wilder has clearly recognised this and already stated that he will only work with a set of lads who work and want to play for the club, not the Premier League.

The manager who became the first to win the prestigious Sir Alex Ferguson manager of the year award outside the top-flight, has admitted that he will be making changes to the side and investing in some much-needed Premier League quality.

Everything the fan-loved and now publicly loved manager is saying sounds perfect, but finding the right balance is easier said than done.

Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town kept almost the exact same team on their respective promotions to the Premier League, with a few exceptions by simply signing the players they had loaned for the Championship season on a permanent once they had made the step up.

If Wilder is adamant on wanting to make signings though, he should look at what Wolverhampton Wanders has achieved this season.

They have kept the team that performed so well in the Championship and simply added little bits of quality where it mattered in Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio and Raul Jimenez.

With Billy Sharp, Sheffield United are set with a dangerous Premier League striker, but they are short of a class winger, a goalscoring central midfielder and an experience Premier League defender.

Premier League experience is something completely absent from Wilder’s team which may have to be resolved sooner rather than later.

United may only need to make four signings this season, anymore and previous players become unsettled and new players don’t gel.
