Sheffield United will be carrying massive momentum into the Sky Bet Championship next season, having stormed to promotion and the League One title this year.

Whilst the Blades will still be enjoying their success, attentions will surely be turning to the upcoming Championship season, which will offer Chris Wilder’s side a stern test.

Player recruitment will be high on Wilder’s agenda, and two signings have already been made, with Ched Evans and Nathan Thomas set to arrive at Bramall Lane this summer.

Another player who has been linked with making a move to Yorkshire is Exeter City’s Ollie Watkins, whose signature will cost a reported £4m this summer after an impressive campaign in League Two.

Watkins has scored 16 goals across all competitions this season, including two in the play-off semi-final victory over Carlisle United last week, which has put Exeter within 90 minutes of promotion.

At the age of 21, Watkins will improve and has the potential to flourish in the Championship, however, linking up with Wilder’s side might not be the best move for the Blades.

Wilder needs to add some Championship experience to his squad, and with Watkins’ signature likely to demand a multi-million pound transfer fee, the Blades would be wise to avoid a deal.

Evans and Thomas are two new additions to Wilder’s squad, but neither offer the Blades much Championship experience and adding another inexperienced player to their squad could seriously hinder their chances of establishing themselves in the second-tier.

There is no doubting Watkins’ ability, and in the coming years the 21-year old will develop into a great player, but the Blades need to recruit wisely this summer by spending their money on proven Championship players, to add to what they already have.
