Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has told the Sheffield Star that young midfielder David Brooks should have stayed with the club for at least another 12 months.

Wilder was speaking after seeing his Blades side run out comfortable 5-1 winners over Stocksbridge Park Steels in their first pre season friendly of the new season, and insisted that Brooks should have stayed with United.

However, Wilder conceded that it was 'inevitable' that Brooks would move on when he changed his representatives earlier in the year, and said he wishes the youngster nothing but the best in his new Premier League venture.

“I like the lad and I’ve got a good relationship with him. I genuinely wish him all the best. I can understand why he wants to look after himself and his family. Honestly I do. But I also thought he could do that by staying with us for another season and developing from there.added Wilder.

The Blades manager is hoping to use the money generated from the sale, a sum in the region of £12m, to strengthen his squad this summer as he looks to guide the Blades towards a second run at making the playoffs after they fell away from contention last term.
