Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has come out in support of striker Leon Clarke.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, the Blades boss backed last season's leading goalscorer to get going once he gets his first goal of the campaign, despite looking out of sorts in front of goal thus far.

"Leon will get one and then he'll be up and running," Wilder said. "Don't you worry about that."He's putting the work in, he's putting the effort in and he's been contributing in other ways. When he gets his first (this term), then you know there's going to be plenty more coming along."

The Blades striker has been coming in for some criticism from a small section of United fans, who have become concerned at his apparent lack of form since signing a new contract at the start of 2018.

However, Wilder appears to have shut that notion down quickly, and says having four strikers of quality will be key this season as he spoke of his pleasure at seeing the goals spread around the team so far this term.

We've got options up there and that's what we wanted," Wilder said. "All of them bring something a little bit different to the table and we need that flexibility in a division as tough and demanding as this one is."

New signing David McGoldrick has added Championship experience to the Blades ranks while Wilder also managed to snap up Conor Washington on a free transfer on deadline day. Captain Billy Sharp has also gotten off the mark, bagging four in his first six games of the season as United have climbed into the early promotion picture in the Championship.

Blades fans, do you agree with Wilder? Can Clarke come good again? Let us know in the comments!
