Oli McBurnie has delivered an encouraging injury update as he steps up his recovery.

The Sheffield United striker has been out of action since mid-April after suffering a stress fracture in the fifth metatarsal in his foot during the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal.

The 25-year-old has featured in both of the Blades' opening two matches of the season so far after playing 11 minutes against Birmingham City at the weekend and then 45 minutes against Carlisle United in the Carabao Cup midweek.

McBurnie is likely to be a big player for Slavisa Jokanovic's side this term.

In his last season in the Championship with Swansea City the Scotland international scored 24 goals in all competitions for the South Wales side, while he's been limited to just seven strikes in the previous two years where the Blades have been competing in the top flight.

With promotion being the sole aim for Sheffield United this term it's likely that McBurnie will have a big role to play and discussing his recovery from injury, the striker says that he's on the right track to reach 100% fitness.

Speaking to the press, McBurnie said: "The foot feels fine. I was doing rehab with the fitness guys for a lot of time before I could get into full contact training.

"I feel fit, I feel ready. It's about getting minutes under the belt now and getting my way back into the team."

The verdict

Oli McBurnie is facing the prospect of a huge season in his career.

It's clear to see the quality that the Sheffield United man has at his disposal but it's safe to say that his goal tally in the last two seasons has been disappointing.

McBurnie has a great track record in the Championship and so he'll really have a point to prove this term.

Slavisa Jokanovic's side need to be challenging for promotion and the 25-year-old will be trusted as one of the key men to lead the Blades' attacking line in doing so.

Being injured is far from the ideal start to his season but he'll certainly be hoping to continue stepping up his recovery in the coming weeks.
