Sheffield United have confirmed that Chris Basham has signed a new deal that will keep him at Bramall Lane until 2021.

The 30-year-old, who has been a key figure in Chris Wilder's back three this season, is in his fifth season with the club and has contributed significantly to their success in recent years.

And, the Blades confirmed that Basham has been rewarded with a new deal that runs for another two-and-a-half years.

Wilder told the official site that it was thoroughly deserved given the role he has played in establishing the Yorkshire side as a top Championship outfit.

"We have always made the point that if players deserve a new contract then they will be rewarded and that is certainly the case with Chris.

"His performances whilst I've been at the club, and before that, have been exceptional and I'm delighted he has committed to us for the next couple of years."

The former Blackpool man missed his first game of the season through suspension against Nottingham Forest last time out, however, he will expect to return to the side on Friday against Sheffield Wednesday.

Victory in the Steel City derby will see the Blades return to the top of the Championship for 24 hours at least.

The Verdict

This is good news for Sheffield United as Basham is an important player to Wilder, whilst his form warrants a new deal.

He is the sort of reliable performer that every manager will want, whilst his versatility is another positive that he brings to the squad.

Now, he will hope to make his next few years with the club memorable, as they push for a return to the Premier League.
