Former Blackburn Rovers boss Gary Bowyer is being linked with a return to management with League One side Sheffield United, according to the Sun

The Blades hired former Southampton and Reading manager Nigel Adkins in the summer following the sacking of Nigel Clough, but the hierarchy at Bramall Lane haven't been impressed with results and the South Yorkshire club currently sit 12th in League One with 27 points from 20 matches.

The Sun understands that if results don't improve, then Adkins could find himself replaced by Bowyer.

Adkins' side have won just once in their last seven league matches but are through to the FA Cup third round after beating Oldham Athletic on Saturday thanks to a single goal from Matty Done.

Bowyer is currently out of work after being sacked by Blackburn last month after almost three years at the helm.

He is keen to get back into work and has thrown his name into the hat for the vacant manager's job at Reading, after the Royals dispensed with Steve Clarke on Friday.

The 44-year-old initially took charge of Rovers in a caretaker role and guided the club away from the relegation zone before taking the job on a permanent basis. Over the next two seasons, the Mancunian oversaw two failed play-off attempts, but his hands were tied in the transfer market as the Lancashire outfit suffered financial trouble and were later placed under a transfer embargo, which saw sales of key players in the likes of Rudy Gestede and Tom Cairney.

Sheffield United are in league action a week on Sunday as they face high-flying Coventry City at home before tough fixtures against Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic and Bradford City. It is a run of fixtures which could ultimately decide Adkins' future.
