Sheffield United are at the front of the queue in the race to sign Cambridge United midfielder George Maris, according to The Sun.

Barnsley and Burton Albion - who were both relegated to League One on the final day of the Championship season - are also interested in Maris and have watched him ahead of a possible summer move.

But Sheffield United are in pole position to land Maris, who has had an extremely impressive end to the season at Cambridge.

The 22-year-old has struck 10 goals in 40 league games for the U's this season, including five in his last eight games of the season.

These performances towards the end of the campaign earned him a place in the League Two Team of the Week four times in the last five weeks.

They also earned him many admirers from higher up in the Football League with Championship side Sheffield United leading Barnsley and Burton in the race to snap him up.

The former Barnsley academy product is being considered by his old club, having left Oakwell in summer 2016 with just four senior appearances to his name.

Maris has one year left to run on his contract at Cambridge and these three clubs are hoping to poach him on the cheap.

The Verdict

Maris is showing a lot of potential and scoring plenty of goals from the wing.

Towards the end of the season, he showed just what he is capable of and has put himself in the shop window for a move up the divisions.

Although he may not be ready for Championship football yet, the 22-year-old is still young and learning so he could be a shrewd addition for the Blades while he would definitely be a solid signing for Burton or Barnsley.
