According to a report in the Daily Mail, Sheffield United are interested in signing James Wilson from Manchester United, with the striker set to be available on-loan during the January transfer window.

Wilson has previously had loan spells in the Sky Bet Championship with Brighton and Hove Albion and Derby County, but has recently spent a significant period of time out of action due to injury, with a move a possibility in the New Year.

Sheffield United are reportedly keen on taking Wilson from Manchester United in January, with Chris Wilder looking to bolster his squad ahead of the second-half of the Championship season, where the Blades will be looking to maintain their push for the play-offs.

Wilson, 22, has limited first-team experience, but has represented Man United in both the Premier League and Champions League, as well as making over 30 appearances in the Championship during his respective loan spells.

The Blades currently sit sixth the Championship table, but have seen their automatic promotion hopes dashed in recent weeks, with Wilder’s side suffering four defeats in just five fixtures.

Wilder’s squad currently boasts the Championship’s top scorer in Leon Clarke, who has 14 goals so far this season.

The Verdict

Wilson would be a good addition to Wilder’s squad at Bramall Lane, with the Manchester United striker sure to add to the quality currently within Sheffield United’s squad.

The likes of Clarke, Billy Sharp and Clayton Donaldson offer Wilder a range of different options in attack, but Wilson would bring more competition for places.

Sheffield United’s squad has looked stretched in recent weeks, and reinforcements will be key in the New Year.
