Sheffield United are monitoring the situation surrounding Filip Uremovic going into the summer transfer window.
The Championship club signed the defender by taking advantage of FIFA’s temporary transfer period for foreign players stranded in Russia or Ukraine.
Uremovic had his contract with Rubin Kazan suspended, which effectively made him a short-term free agent for the Blades.
But it now remains unclear what the next steps will be for the 25-year old, with FIFA still yet to announce a further update to their initial rule changes.
The Croatian has played three times for Paul Heckingbottom’s side since arriving at Bramall Lane near the end of the season.
The Blades’ boss has confirmed that no decisions have yet been made regarding his situation, but it is believed that United would be keen to keep the defender with the club if possible.
"There's so many things involved in that," said the 44-year old, via Yorkshire Live.
"No decisions have been made either way.
"When me and Filip first spoke it was to the end of the season and we were both happy with that. I know Filip has enjoyed his time here and it has maybe opened his eyes to England, to Sheffield and the possibility of working elsewhere.
"But that's going to be a real personal decision for Filip if it gets to that. He's captain of Rubin Kazan on a terrific contract. If he is allowed to suspend it further or potentially cancel it, it's going to be huge decision for him.
"It might be crystal clear to him and he may have things in his mind what he wants to do but we are not at that point yet where he knows what can happen."
Uremovic has stepped into the side amid a defensive injury crisis that has afflicted the club as it battles for promotion to the Premier League.
United go into the final game of the season this Saturday with the side currently inside the top six.
However, a game with league champions Fulham will decide their fate, with a victory needed to avoid falling behind the likes of Middlesbrough or Millwall.
The game kicks off at 12.30pm.
The Verdict
It is under horrific circumstances that Uremovic is in this situation.
It will be up to FIFA to make a decision about the numerous players who are in a similar position to the Croatian.
United would be happy with his permanent signing as he has proven a useful addition to the side at a key moment in their campaign.
But it will likely be a decision made by FIFA that determines the defender’s future.
