Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has given an update on the club's summer transfer window, including the rumoured move for Aston Villa's Scott Hogan.

The Blades manager was speaking to the Sheffield Star during their pre-season training camp in Portugal and said that the calibre of players they are trying to bring in is delaying signings.

"We've got two or three bids in for players, players who make us better," Wilder said.

"Players of proven Championship experience and above, they take longer to get in because the numbers are greater and the interest is greater."

When asked about Hogan, Wilder said: "Are we in for players who have played at the top end of the Championship? Yes we are. It's not a revolution, it's evolution.

"We want to our good players to see other good players come into the building. I'm sure, over the next few weeks, you'll see it really ramp up."

Hogan moved to Villa Park in January 2017 from Championship rivals Brentford but has struggled to get going under Steve Bruce.

Despite making 31 appearances last year, Hogan scored just six goals, although a lot of these came as substitute appearances with the 26-year-old even falling behind youth graduate Keinan Davis in the pecking order.

Hogan has struggled with injuries badly since his move from Rochdale to Brentford, missing large chunks of the last few campaigns.

So far this summer the Blades have brought in just one new face in the shape of Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson on a season-long loan.

Wilder is keen to bring in some more firepower this summer with to help top scorer Leon Clarke.

With Clayton Donaldson being released it leaves Billy Sharp as the only other option for the Blades this season.

Another player who Wilder is interested in is Southampton youngster Sam Gallagher but that would most likely be a loan move.

The verdict

Hogan is a risky signing for Sheffield United.

There is no doubt that he does have the ability to perform at the top end of the second tier, but there have been question marks over his attitude and his injury problems make him a risk.

If Wilder is intent on bringing him in it is important that he is not the only striker they bring in.
