Sheffield United are prioritising signing a central defender this summer, as Chris Wilder continues to strengthen his squad ahead of their return to the Sky Bet Championship, reports the Sheffield Telegraph.

Wilder has already been extremely active during the summer transfer window, making four signings.

Ched Evans, Nathan Thomas, Enda Stevens and George Baldock have all arrived at Bramall Lane ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, and others are set to follow in the coming months.

The Blades have made bids for Charlton Athletic’s Ricky Holmes and Southend United’s Ryan Leonard, but Wilder is reportedly keen to add a central defender to his squad.

Wilder missed out on Ryan Bennett earlier this summer, with the Norwich City man opting for a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but remains in the market for a defender to fill the hole Ethan Ebanks-Landell has left, after he returned to Molineux following a loan spell.

Another player the Blades have been linked with is Everton’s Phil Jagielka, but completing a deal for the former England defender is proving difficult for Wilder due to the 34-year old’s current wage demands.

Jagielka would have to take a significant cut to the £50k-a-week wages he currently earns with Everton.
