Sheffield United hoping for breakthrough in pursuit of 13-goal League One ace

According to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield United remain interested in signing Ricky Holmes from Charlton Athletic, despite finding it difficult to make a breakthrough in any potential discussions.

Chris Wilder is keen to bring Holmes to Bramall Lane, but Charlton are insistent the forward will remain at the Valley, dismissing the Blades’ advances.

Holmes has been identified as a transfer target for Wilder due to his impressive form over the last two years.

The 30-year old scored 11 goals during the 2015/16 season for Northampton Town, who were then managed by Wilder, before earning a transfer to Charlton in the summer of 2016.

Last season in League One, Holmes again impressed, scoring 13 goals, including four from his last five appearances, showing his capabilities at a higher level of football.

It is that form that has seen Wilder push to make Holmes his sixth summer addition ahead of the Blades’ Sky Bet Championship return.

Ched Evans, Nathan Thomas, Enda Stevens, George Baldock and Richard Stearman have all been added to Wilder’s squad, as he prepares the Blades for Championship football for the first time since 2011.

Wilder is also in pursuit of Southend United’s Ryan Leonard, but like Holmes, a deal is proving difficult to agree.
