Sheffield United have been rebuffed yet again in their attempts to sign Darragh Lenihan from Blackburn Rovers, Sky Sports News is reporting.

Sky sources understand that Sheffield United's latest bid of £1.25m has been rejected by Blackburn Rovers, who are desperate to keep hold of their man ahead of the new season.

Sheffield United have lodged a number of bids for Lenihan over the summer transfer window but each has proved to be unsuccessful.

Blackburn Rovers see the academy product as a major part of their plans for next season and are unwilling to sell.

The 23-year-old has two years left on his current deal with the Lancashire based outfit and is held with high regard by Tony Mowbray.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international predominantly operates as a centre half although he can also play in midfield too.

Sheffield United have brought in seven new players this summer but have also been frustrated in their pursuit of three League One stars.

The Blades have landed John Lundstram, George Baldock, Richard Stearman, Enda Stevens, Nathan Thomas, Ched Evans and Jamal Blackman since winning promotion but have struggled to prise away Ryan Leonard (Southend United), Ricky Holmes (Charlton Athletic) and Darragh Lenihan (Blackburn Rovers).

The Verdict

I think it is time that Sheffield United gave up in this pursuit and looked at alternative targets.

Chris Wilder is obviously still discontent with his centre back options and wants to bring in another defender despite already landing Richard Stearman.

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon has previously stated that Blackburn are holding out for £5m for Lenihan.

If this is to be believed, then the Blades are barking up the wrong tree with £1.25m bids and the Blackburn defender is not worth £5m.
