Bristol City have been boosted in their pursuit of signing of Aston Villa striker Scott Hogan.

The former Brentford man was on loan with Sheffield United last season and helped the Blades back into the Premier League with some vital goals. However, according to the Sheffield Star, United will not chase up the permanent signing of Hogan as Chris Wilder looks at other options.

This news will be a huge boost to Robins manager Lee Johnson, who is keen on signing the Aston Villa man as he looks to strengthen his ranks ahead of what will be another expected play-off push next season.

Hogan moved to Villa Park a few seasons back in a mega-money move from Brentford, but has struggled to get going for the Villans and is expected to make a move away from the club after Dean Smith led the Midlands outfit to promotion via the play-offs.

The Republic of Ireland international scored the crucial opening goal for Sheffield United as they saw off Ipswich to seal promotion, and incidentally, bagged against Bristol City too as the Robins saw off Chris Wilder's men at Bramall Lane.

Hogan will be hoping for a fresh start and could well see the move to Ashton Gate as something of a blessing as he looks to get his career firmly back on track.

The Verdict

Hogan would be a solid signing for City and news of United's lack of interest is no real surprise given the funds they now have available.

The Irishman would offer pace and movement in the Robins' attack, and Villa will no doubt be willing to let him go too as they seek to overhaul their own squad ahead of their Premier League return.
