Wigan Athletic have entered the face to sign Huddersfield midfielder, Jonathan Hogg according to Football Insider.

It had previously been reported by The Sun, that Sheffield United were interested in signing the experienced midfielder ahead of the new season.

Hogg made 30 league appearances for the Terriers last season, but was unable to stop them from being relegated back into the Championship after a brief spell in the Premier League.

If he was to move to Wigan, it would certainly come as a surprise, especially with Sheffield United rivalling the Latics to the potential signing of Hogg.

He's was one of the few players to come away with credit for Huddersfield in a disappointing spell in the Premier League last season.

It looks as though it's only a matter of time before he is to leave the Terriers, with potential suitors already lining up a move for the 30-year-old.

Wigan will be hoping to improve on last year's campaign, where Paul Cook's side finished 18th in the Championship, and adding Hogg to their side would be a step in the right direction, that's for sure.

But Sheffield United are likely to still be the frontrunners to sign the experienced midfielder, with Premier League football being offered by the Blades.

The Verdict:

This would be a fantastic signing by Wigan if they can somehow beat Sheffield United to the signing of Hogg.

I'll admit that I had my doubts as to whether Hogg would be able to just adjust to life in the Premier League with Huddersfield, but he certainly proved me wrong.

He's an excellent option to have in front of the defence and I would be surprised if Wigan managed to pull this one off.

I think he's destined for a move back into the Premier League before the new season gets underway.
