Brighton and Hove Albion are set to submit a £6m offer for Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell, according to the print edition of The Mirror via the Sky Sports News Paper Talk page.

Sheffield United now face a battle to hold onto O'Connell as Brighton plan to test their resolve with a concrete bid of £6m.

Despite having a solid pairing of Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk at the back, and signing Nigeria international Leon Balogun, Brighton are still after another centre-half.

Earlier in the window, the Seagulls were pursuing Reading star Liam Moore but they have now turned their attention to O'Connell.

The 24-year-old established himself as a regular in the Sheffield United side during the 2016/17 season, playing in 44 of the 46 league games as the Blades won promotion.

Chris Wilder continued to give the 6ft 3in centre-half a starring role in the Championship last term and he has now played 98 games in total for Sheffield United.

However, the former Brentford defender could be on the move again as Brighton prepare a major bid to poach him from Sheffield United.

The Verdict

Losing O'Connell would be devastating for Wilder, who has been actively hunting for other centre-backs to join him in the starting team.

Without O'Connell, Sheffield United would not have any guaranteed starts in the back three.

But could the former Blackburn Rovers man resist the chance to move to the Premier League - even if he does end up as a fourth choice centre-half.
