Sheffield United striker Ched Evans is expected to head out on loan today, according to a report by The Sheffield Star.

Evans is set to join a League One club on loan later today with a number of clubs circling around his signature.

The 13-cap former Wales international is wanted by Fleetwood Town - now managed by Joey Barton - as well as a number of other League One sides.

Evans played just 13 games for the Blades last season and failed to score, finding himself behind Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke in the pecking order.

The controversial striker spent two and a half years in prison after being convicted of rape but has since been acquitted and returned to Bramall Lane last summer.

However, he is now heading away from the club on a temporary basis.

Evans' departure is likely to prompt Sheffield United to speed up their search for a new centre-forward.

David McGoldrick - who was recently released by Ipswich Town - is joining on trial while Scott Hogan (Aston Villa) and Sam Gallagher (Southampton) remain targets.

The Verdict

No matter where he goes, Evans will still receive a frosty reception from the fans as he is a controversial figure who divides opinion.

But looking purely at his on-the-pitch credentials, this could be a shrewd move for Fleetwood.

If he gets back to his best, Evans is a proven goal scorer at League One level.
