Sheffield United are set to be handed a major boost to their promotion bid with the news that Chris Basham is set to sign a new deal with the club in the near future.

Basham has played a crucial part in Chris Wilder's side's promotion charge this season and with the Blades currently sat top of the Championship table, there is every reason to be optimistic for Sheffield United fans going forward.

The 30-year-old has started every league game so far this season, taking his total appearances to over 200 since he joined the club. And, Basham has certainly made himself a favourite amongst the club's supporters.

Blades boss Chris Wilder revealed that a new deal for Basham is 'pretty close' and deals for other players could be finalised before the hectic festive period.

Before the international break, Blades boss Chris Wilder revealed to the The Sheffield Star that discussions with the centre-back were underway over a potential new deal.

"I should imagine Bash will get concluded pretty soon," Wilder said. "We've spoken to his agent.

"What Bash brings to the table is pretty plain to see. He's loving his football, especially over the last two and a bit seasons hopefully. He's got a big part to play in the future, fingers crossed, and we want that continuity."

Basham will not be involved for Sheffield United this weekend when they face promotion rivals Nottingham Forest at the City Ground due to suspension.

The Verdict

News of Basham's eagerness to sign a new deal will come as a huge boost to Sheffield United.

The defender has been crucial in their promotion push this season and I think that with Basham committing his long-term future to the club, we could see a number of players follow in his footsteps by signing new deals.

Blades supporters will be overjoyed at the news and they'll believe that he can now focus fully on their promotion ambitions this season.
