Sheffield United have reportedly entered the race to sign Shrewsbury Town midfielder Jon Nolan, who has recently handed in a transfer request at the New Meadow.

It is widely believed that Nolan is being courted by former manager Paul Hurst at Ipswich, but his availability has alerted Chris Wilder, according to the Sheffield Star.

26-year old Nolan played a pivotal role in the Shrews third-place league finish last season, as well as their unsuccessful charge to the Checkatrade Trophy final, where they lost 1-0 to Lincoln City.

Nolan followed Hurst from Grimsby to Ipswich and handed in his request at the same time as Toto Nsiala, another former Mariner. Both were instrumental in Shrewsbury's campaign which included double Wembley heartbreak.

Nolan started out as a trainee at Everton and had spells at Lincoln and Wrexham before winding up at Grimsby, whom he helped to National League promotion in 2016.

Sheffield United are in the hunt for a creative midfielder after selling David Brooks to Bournemouth for £10m earlier this summer.

The Verdict

Jon Nolan is a player on the rise, he proved his worth at Shrewsbury last season and attracted interest from across the EFL.

Whilst the Paul Hurst link may leave Ipswich in pole position, news that he could be on the move will alert a host of clubs. Perhaps Shrewsbury will be reluctant to sell to Hurst, possibly giving other clubs more than a fighting chance of securing his services.
