Sheffield United are still weighing up the possibility of making a move to sign Sam Gallagher this summer.

Chris Wilder showed an interest in the Southampton striker last August, but a move never materialised. However, Wilder’s increased summer budget this year means Gallagher is once again under consideration at Bramall Lane, according to the Sheffield Star.

Last year, Gallagher opted for a move to Birmingham City, where he spent the entire 2017/18 campaign.

The 22-year-old featured on 34 occasions across all competitions, returning seven goals for the Blues.

33 of those appearances came in the Championship, with Gallagher’s six league goals helping Birmingham avoid relegation to League One under Garry Monk.

He has since returned to Southampton, with the Blades considering an approach to take the striker on board ahead of next season.

Wilder is looking to add to his striking options ahead of next season, despite Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke proving to be one of the Championship’s most prolific partnerships last season.

That duo returned 33 goals for the Blades, who finished 10th on their return to the Championship.

The Verdict

Gallagher certainly offers something different to Sharp and Clarke.

The 22-year-old has age on his side, as well as plenty of Championship experience.

Next year, it’s hard to imagine that Sharp and Clarke will be as prolific in the Championship, with Wilder looking to add to his options.

Someone like Gallagher doesn’t seem ready for the Premier League, and another year in the Championship should certainly be something that Southampton are open to.
